WATER MITIGATION 101: WHY DO FROZEN PIPES BURST?

• Tuesday, January 20, 2015

When the temperatures drop during the winter months, many home and business owners worry about their pipes freezing. Pipes on exterior walls, in crawlspaces and attics are particularly vulnerable during these extremely frosty times!

Frozen pipes burst because water molecules crystallize into an open hexagonal form when it freezes. In this state, water expands and takes up more space than when it’s in liquid form. As the frozen water (ice) expands it causes a great deal of pressure between the blockage and the faucet eventually causing it to burst. See the picture below with the frozen water bottle vs the liquid water bottle.

Even if only one pipe in your home bursts that damage can create thousands of dollars in restoration damage including wood rot and mold and mildew growth.

Once you notice that your home has suffered a burst pipe, turn off the water at the mail water valve. Call your insurance provider and a qualified water mitigation restoration professional like Neverman Mitigation and Cleaning to help dry out and restore the damage caused by the water.

Water Mitigation Facts and Stats:

  • The freezing point for water is 32 degrees
  • The 2nd most frequently filed insurance claim is from damage resulting from a plumbing failure or frozen pipes.
  • According to the American Insurance Association, water damage claims have grown faster than other components of Home Owners Insurance.
  • 250 gallons of water are released each day due to a 1/8 inch crack in a pipe!

Neverman Mitigation and Cleaning is an award winning company that has extensive experience helping home and business owners who have encountered damage as a result of winter weather conditions. If your home or business has suffered water damage or structural damage call us at (614) 294-1100.

EFFECTS OF SNOW AND ICE ON ROOFTOPS

• Friday, January 2, 2015

The snow and ice that currently cover the streets, homes and businesses of central Ohio, and the threat of more snow on the horizon add weight and cause stress to roofs. When snow is saturated, it weighs 20 pounds per cubic foot, which means the average size home covered in two feet of snow can have an additional 38,000 pounds on top of it! As you can imagine, this additional weight can weaken a structure and cause damage that requires a call to your insurance company followed by mitigation and restoration services.

With temperatures moving up and down, the shift from snow and ice – melting to water and then freezing back to snow again can wreak havoc on the integrity of your home. As temperatures rise and the snow and ice melt the water can seep into the roof causing damage to the interior of the home (attics), as well as rotting the roof and ruining the gutters. Extra moisture encourages mold and mildew in walls, ceilings and insulation forcing a need for mitigation and restoration. When the temperatures fall the treat of ice dams forming becomes an issue.

What to look for when heavy snow hits the roof:

  • A visual sagging of the roof
  • cracking or popping sounds inside the home
  • roof leaks
  • cracks in the walls
  • doors and windows that are difficult to open or doors that pop open on their own

Attempting to remove snow and ice from your roof is VERY dangerous. Most often DYIers use rakes to remove snow. This option may work fine if your live in a single story home and you are removing snow from overhangs, but otherwise it is not an advisable solution to the issue. It is important to remember when using a metal rake that they do conduct electricity, and and if the rake comes in contact with a power line, so do you! Most home improvement stores have “Snow Rakes” on their shelves. These are a better alternative to removing snow from your roof.

The use of ladders is also not recommended as the rungs of the ladder freeze easily and can cause you to slip and fall. Slip and falls also happen when you climb up onto your roof to clear snow. On top of that, you risk damaging your roof causing potential further damage.

The safest way to handle excessive snow and ice on your roof is to hire a dependable company with experience removing snow from roof tops.

Neverman Construction Co. has extensive experience helping home and business owners who have encountered roof damage as a result of winter weather conditions. If your home or business has suffered water damage or structural damage call us at (614) 294-1100.

2014 NARI ACE AWARD

NEVERMAN CONSTRUCTION CO. RECEIVES AWARD FOR CONSUMER EXCELLENCE (ACE) PRESENTED BY NARI

• Wednesday, December 10, 2014

COLUMBUS (December 10, 2014) – Neverman Construction Co. has been recognized as a recipient of the 2014 NARI ACE Award. The ACE Award is presented by the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) of Central Ohio. The ACE (Achievement in Consumer Excellence) Award, a consumer rated awards program honors NARI members that provide exemplary products and/or service. The award recognizes professionals in the remodeling industry and vendors that receive a high overall rating on four criteria as judged by consumers who have actually used their products and/or services. Unlike some other rating services, consumers do not pay a subscription fee to submit a rating or receive a referral.

“The NARI ACE Award provides consumers a valuable tool to help them begin and complete successful remodeling projects, and that tool is the knowledge that they are selecting a professional remodeling contractor or product supplier they can count on to do the quality work they desire. This consumer rated program provides additional assurance consumers can count on quality, professional services. The program also provides a no cost mechanism for consumers to provide feedback on work performed for them by NARI members. Our goal is to expand our membership base to encompass all industry partners that share our professional values and code of ethics,” states Shari Bates, CAE, Executive Director of NARI of Central Ohio.

Consumers have rated all ACE Award recipients on four criteria: Quality of work, Professionalism, Reliability and Timeliness. In order to receive the NARI ACE Award, the company must be a member of NARI and must receive an average grade of 3.5 or better with 4.0 being the highest rating, based on the scores submitted by consumers.

Neverman Construction is proud to have received this recognition for eight consecutive years. “The ACE Award is important because it is only given as a result of satisfied customers,” Says Ken Neverman, President of Neverman Construction Co. “Receiving this designation for the last eight years proves that we are exceeding expectations.” Neverman Construction Co. has provided disaster restoration services (fire damage, smoke damage, water damage, storm damage) to Columbus, Ohio home and business owners for 14 years.

The NARI ACE Awards were presented during the NARI annual Awards Gala on Friday, December 5th, 2014 at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Columbus.
